An estimated 3,800 young people go homeless each night in New York City and Gay, lesbian and bisexual youths accounted for nearly a third of the homeless - kicked out of their homes after their parents learn of their sexual orientation.
“Young people who are homeless take great care to look like everyone else. They’re unbelievably creative in their ability to find ways to make it look like they’re not homeless at all,” said Margo Hirsch, executive director of the Empire State Coalition of Youth and Family Services, which conducted the survey for the city.
The survey found that while many homeless youth went to city shelters, 42 percent slept on the streets, subways or in abandoned buildings. Some, the study said, turn to prostitution to find a “trick”, spending nights with clients.
